LIVE FROM THE CATH LAB!

You may have seen it on local television or read about it on the internet. Dr. Yazan Khatib performed 2 cardiac interventions in our Cath Lab that were beamed by satellite to New Orleans. It was part of the 2010 New Cardiovascular Horizons Conference. Cardiologists from across the country were able to watch the procedures and ask Dr. Khatib questions. It was a big job that took months to plan. Memorial Hospital was the only local hospital to be featured in a live case! 76-year-old Ronald Fulton was not interested in being a television star, even though his procedure was featured on Channel 4 News. He just wanted to get back on his feet. For months, it's was hard for him to walk, and he's been in real pain. "I don't know how many people have even thought about or experienced not being able to walk," Fulton said. "With a broken leg or something, you know you are going to get over that. With this, you don't know if it's your heart, your legs, where the problem is." Dr. Khatib found the problem -- a blocked artery in Fulton's right leg. Then, in front of an audience of other doctors hundreds of miles away, he performed a life-changing procedure. First, a catheter was inserted to get to the blockage. A small balloon was then used to open the artery, and finally, a stent was put in to make sure the blood continues to flow. Dr. Khatib told a local news station that he was excited to feature a less-invasive option to bypass. "We've had so many patients that were risking amputation that we completely saved," said Dr. Khatib. "We've had so many patients that were completely crippled, I mean homebound, and we got them back up."

June 2, 2010 – Memorial Hospital hosted two live case studies as part of the New Cardiovascular Horizons 2010 Conference. Doctors from around the world watched as Dr. Yazan Khatib performed 2 life-changing procedures in the Cath Lab. The procedures were beamed via satellite to the conference so Dr. Khatib could explain his techniques and answer questions for other cardiologists. The first case study was part of a lecture on an international approach to Chronic Total Occlusions. The second case study was part of a lecture on tailoring interventions in the Superficial Femoral Artery. Memorial hospital was the only hospital in Florida to be featured in a live case study. Hospitals in Germany, Ohio, Tennessee, Louisiana and Alabama also took part.
