Sumant Lamba, MD, FSCAI
Director Coronary Interventions FCCI
Interventional Cardiology
Dr. Sumant Lamba, the son of a doctor, watched his dad in action and decided to follow in his footsteps. I watched my father do so much good, and saw the respect people had for him, says Dr. Lamba, who joined First Coast Cardiovascuar Institute earlier this year. That was my motivation for entering the medical profession.
Dr. Lamba is a highly qualified and accomplished interventional cardiovascular specialist, says Dr. Ashchi, cardiologist and co-founder of FCCI. He is board certified and a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. He is a great addition to our family of physicians, and we are delighted to have him aboard to provide the advanced knowledge and skill that enhances our ability to help heart patients.
Most recently, Dr. Lamba was director of the Coronary Care Unit at the Ohio State University Heart Center where he specialized in interventional cardiology and heart failure/cardiac transplantation for four years.
Dr. Lamba practiced with his father for a year before coming to the U.S. for a residency in internal medicine at Wright State School of Medicine in Dayton, Ohio. In his third year, he was selected as chief resident in recognition of his outstanding achievements there. While in Dayton, Dr. Lamba established a medical clinic for the areas underserved population. From there he completed a fellowship in heart failure and cardiac transplantation at the University of Cincinnati and received interventional cardiology training at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky.
In Kentucky, Dr. Lamba worked with Dr. Bill Abraham, one of top heart failure doctors in the country. He joined the faculty at the University of Kentucky as assistant professor of medicine, co-director of clinical research and was also associate program director for the fellowship program there. Dr. Abraham later accepted a position at Ohio State University and invited Dr. Lamba to come to OSU.
My wife and I moved to Columbus, Ohio, where I served on the faculty, running the heart failure and transplant program, in addition to serving as director of the coronary care unit at OSU Medical Center, says Dr. Lamba. I also taught doctors in the fellowship program how to perform interventional cardiology heart catheterizations, angioplasties and stent procedures, Meanwhile, his wife, Mona J. Shah, M.D., (who also joined FCCI this year), completed her fellowship in cardiology at the Ohio State University Heart Center.
While at the OSU Center, Lamba participated in more than 20 clinical trials in heart failure and interventional cardiology. He was also principal investigator for several studies. One of the studies involved identifying candidates who were best suited for biventrical pacemakers, says Dr. Lamba.
First Coast Cardiovascular Institutes Dr. Vaqar Ali had trained under Dr. Lamba in Kentucky. So when an opportunity came up for a new interventional cardiologist in Jacksonville, Dr. Ali recommended Dr. Lamba to Drs. Ashchi and Khatib. Dr. Ali encouraged me to come here, says Dr. Lamba. I loved the dynamics of the group instantly. That, plus the warm weather, made it an easy decision.
Dr. Lamba says he is excited about some of the new heart failure technology he will be introducing to North Florida patients. One of the new techniques I used at Ohio State ultrafiltration hasn't been available in Jacksonville before, he says. This uses a process similar to dialysis, in which an IV is used to draw extra fluid from a heart patient. We know this technology works, and in trials it was able to make patients feel much better. It's also a far more effective alternative than water pills.
