Yazan Khatib, MD, FACC, FSCAI, FCCP, FABVM
Vice President & Director Limb Salvage/Endovascular Interventions FCCI
Interventional Cardiovascular Disease
Dr. Khatib was recruited to the prestigious Cleveland Clinic for his residency in Medicine. That is also where his friendship with Dr. Ashchi started. The two young men observed each other's keen interest in the patient, and respected each other's approach to patient care, based on up-to-date science, sound judgment, but most importantly, respect and compassion.
Upon completion of his residency, Dr. Khatib accepted an excellent cardiology fellowship at Loyola University in Chicago. At that time, the advent of coronary stents addressed many of the limitations of balloon angioplasty and promised a new era in the field of vascular repair without bypass. Following his cardiology fellowship at Loyola, Dr. Khatib accepted an appointment at the Indiana Heart Institute & St. Vincent Hospital (Indianapolis, IN) for a year of dedicated interventional cardiology training, where he had the privilege of working with some of the most renowned experts in the field of interventional cardiology. He then returned to Chicago for a dedicated period of six months of additional training in the endovascular management of the peripheral vessels (i.e., legs, kidneys, aorta, arms and head).
The two friends kept in touch and, while Dr. Ashchi started a very successful practice here, Dr. Khatib did the same in Indianapolis, establishing himself as one of the leading local experts in the different treatment modalities of vascular disease. He has been very diligent & successful with endovascular non-surgical techniques, including opening closed leg vessels and sparing many patients dreadful amputations, thus attracting patients from neighboring states.
His huge enthusiasm for repairing even the most difficult cases without major bypass surgery, made him one of only a handful of accredited operators across the nation to proctor physicians in the rapidly evolving field of endovascular therapy. He has given many lectures in the field, and has trained many physicians across the nation .
A "straight-A" student since childhood, Dr. Khatib's intrigue with cardiology dates back to his early years as a medical student. A graduate of Damascus University School of Medicine, he spent time as a visiting student in Leuven University in Belgium, with some of the best cardiac surgeons in Europe. It was then he realized his deep interest in the cardiovascular system, and aspired to repair it without major surgery.
Dr. Khatib moved to Jacksonville with his lovely wife, and their daughter. As a co-founder of The First Coast Cardiovascular Institute, he is happy to be working alongside his friend an partner, both of whom share a serious commitment to excellent patient care.
When not taking care of patients, Dr. Khatib likes to enjoy the outdoors and working out. He admits his roller blades and bicycle are getting rusty from the lack of use with long hours at work. His free time is now devoted to his growing family.
